Indeed. And back then there was a few in the the press willing to push. I remember P.J. O'Rourke relating a story of Ted at a press conference and Ted went into his "Where was George?" schpeel and one press guy piped up, "He wasn't out drowning campaign aides."
I'll give her props for not having had any 'work' done on her face. She's just two years shy of the age her mother lived to be. She hasn't generated any domestic scandals, and that's saying something in her nexus. Her maternal grandmother had seven grandchildren of whom three have children of their own; she's one of the three. She's managed to stay married.
Her mother was assiduously quiet for over 30 years, and made some satisfactory choices about what to do with her time (e.g. work for a publishing house and involve herself in some carefully selected philanthropic concerns). Caroline worked as a museum curator for about five years, went to law school, passed the bar but never practiced, wrote fluffy books, associated her name with some silly awards, made political endorsements, and lobbied Gov. Patterson and Pres. Obama for appointments. (Patterson told her she'd have to pay her dues; Obama gave her what she wanted). It wouldn't surprise me to discover she's a kinder person in meatspace than her mother and the older of her aunts ever managed to be, but her mother had a regard for appearances which saved her from some ill-advised excursions.
