As the wag said, I voted for Trump so that he'd fire people like Marie Yovanovitch. NB. A couple of years back, they were complaining about the housecleaning being done by Rex Tillerson. We now have the erstwhile chief of mission at the UN saying on the record that Tillerson's basic disposition was insubordinate. How does Julia Ioffe puzzle that out?
If she's talking about people with the rank of Career Minister and Career Ambassador, it should occur to her that people in the top strata tend to have been working their way up for a while. Get it, they're old. Marie Yovanovitch was 61 when she was shunted off to a contract research center to await her pension. About 1/2 the population working at age 62 will leave the workforce over the succeeding six years.

Since career foreign service people have been responsible for some of our worst foreign affairs disasters, this looks like a feature, not a bug.
