Remember actor Eddie Albert, the guy in Green Acres and a great many movies? Come to find out that in his younger days, the guy was kind of a badass because the Battle of Tarawa was pretty rough. Charnel house, meat grinder, Civil War battle, over-the-top in WW1 kind of rough.

He was 37 years old when he accomplished that, and he wasn't a military professional, just another wartime volunteer.
(Another biographical curio is that he married quite late - aged 39 - and his children were born when he was 45 and 48 years old).
