Never had a problem. I take a paring knife and slice around the avocado to make halves. Twist it, and they come apart. If you're making guacamole, use a spoon. If avocado slices are wanted, use the paring knife to cut it in quarters. Pull the skin off, and cut slices as you go around.
The idea of taking a large knife and trying to cut through that pit doesn't sound smart.
